Field Engineer - San Francisco Bay Area

The Field Engineer works as a member of the sales team to provide pre-sales technical support during the sales cycle, including demonstrating rPath technology, managing software evaluations with prospective customers, and overcoming technical sales objections.

This position will focus on positioning and selling rPath Release Automation solutions into large Enterprise accounts in the Western US.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Perform technical product demonstrations to prospective customers or users.
  • Assist in the sales qualification process of prospective customers and potential Evaluation Projects or "Proofs of Concept" (POC).
  • Provide technical assistance to customers throughout the cycle of the Evaluation Project. This includes the following: software installation; training of the customer in the software basics required to conduct the evaluation; providing technical account management to ensure the focus and track the progress of the evaluation; assist in the presentation of results.
  • Provide clear and concise documentation prior to, during, and after the Evaluation Projects to assist in the POC tracking process.
  • Occasionally deliver formal training to the customer.
  • Occasionally assist the Engineering department by periodically testing new software releases, reporting customer feedback, and submitting bug reports and new feature requests.
  • Occasionally deliver on-site implementation services to new customers. These services will include: software installation; assistance with network and system administration issues; application development; new user training.

Key Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  • 4 year degree
  • 5 years of Pre-Sales Engineering experience, additional 8-10 years of industry experience in Software Engineering preferred
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to travel more than 50%
  • Self-motivated, self-starter, sense of urgency, personable, extroverted personality
  • Well organized
  • Highly proficient in Linux system administration skills
  • Familiar with the structure and assembly of the Linux operating system
  • Comfortable with developing and building software packages in multiple programming languages, including C, Java, Python, Perl
  • Proficient with Linux packaging technologies (RPM, Conary, etc.)
  • Comfortable working in a selling environment, including achieving sales quota requirements
  • Must be able to synthesize customer requirements rapidly into effective solutions
  • Must be able to prepare proposals in conjunction with other parts of the selling organization that accurately reflect customer goals

Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Preferred:

  • Technical expertise and/or experience selling or implementing Systems Automation technologies. For example: Opsware, Bladelogic, Puppet, Cobbler, etc.
  • Understanding of both Application Lifecycle Management and Enterprise Systems Management
  • Proficient MS Windows system administration
  • Experience developing and packaging software for MS Windows
